“Young women are passionate about music and making music their career,” said Sister Susan Frazer, Area Administrator for the Sisters of Mercy in Jamaica. “We are excited and proud to be able to offer this amazing music programme to both women and men. Music performance and technology training is creating cultural and employment opportunities both inside of Jamaica and out. The Alpha School of Music is ready to help young women get involved.”

The music education tradition at Alpha goes back over 100 years and the school has been recognized by local and international entities for its achievements in developing young talent. The Alpha School of Music opened in 2021 offering an Associate Degree in Music Performance. Prior music training is not required and pre-qualifying years are in place to help students prepare for the Associate Degree.
“We look forward to welcoming talented young women into the music program who are passionate about music performance and music technology,” said Gay Magnus, the Alpha Bandmaster. “Good music requires lots of voices and having as many different voices at Alpha is critical to getting the best out of our students. Having women in the program will undoubtedly make our program stronger.”
With a focus on band performance, Alpha School of Music students program learn about performing, recording and producing music in a band context. While all students are required to have a primary instrument, applicants may audition using a disc jockey controller or computer in order to demonstrate their understanding of basic music skills.
“This is another wonderful, history-making step from the Sisters of Mercy who have again responded to the need of the time,” said Margaret Little Wilson, Administrator of the Alpha Institute and Alpha School of Music. “The contributions of women at Alpha will certainly allow for the further expansion of the music programme, Jamaican music education and Jamaican culture. We know the young ladies want to make their mark and Alpha is ready to assist!”
