Alpha School of Music students, Marlon and Tianna, are heading to the USA for the annual ska education internship and they share some of their selections from bands set to perform Sept 12+ 13 in Hampton, Virginia. Click here for festival details and tickets.
MARLON: Eastern Standard time was the title of the very first piece by the Skatalites I heard and fell in love with. Now listening to this band, their ability to mix Funk and Ska is what caught my ear.
TIANNA: In addition to the fact that Tony Greene shares a name with one of the most accomplished saxophonists to pass through the Alpha Boys School, that classic OG Ska feel could be my favourite ska sound.
MARLON: I first took interest in Mr Golding because of his Jamaican heritage. I want to see how he combines his Jamaican roots with British ska.
MARLON: This band is one I’m really looking forward to. Female musicians are not as common as male musicians so to see an entire female band of approximately sixteen women, it is bound to be amazing.
TIANNA: I enjoy the Pietasters musicianship. The horn section is standout, especially the unison horn parts and the solo on “oolooloo”.
TIANNA: The Slackers weave foundation ska and groovy reggae influences very well. Red Light is a lot of fun to listen to.
