It’s official! Last week, the Alpha School of Music celebrated the incredible Class of 2026 with a graduation ceremony that was as inspiring as it was memorable.

Taking place inside the Sister Ignatius Hospitality Room, graduates of the Associate Degree of Arts in Music Performance and the Pro Pathway programme were joined by Marcia Tai Chun, CEO of the Sisters of Mercy in Jamaica which celebrated 146 years of service at 26 South Camp Road this year, Gay Magnus, Director of Music and Ms Margaret Little on stage for the presentation of degrees and certificates.

The atmosphere was elevated by guest speaker, artist, television personality and entrepreneur, Wayne Mitchell, who dropped gems of wisdom for our graduates on what it takes to build a lasting career in music.

“Education does not diminish creativity. [Music education] empowers it [and] gives your passion direction. It allows what is inside to be shared with the world more effectively. The more I learned is the more I realised there is still more to discover.”

From uplifting performances to unforgettable words of advice, the ceremony was the perfect send-off for a group of young men ready to make their mark on the world.

Valedictorian Joel Wallace, in his speech to classmates, faculty and special guests, said the extensive performance opportunities had an impact that transcended music.

“I believe experience is the biggest teacher. Whether its playing at end of semester or mid-semester concerts, various hotels and restaurants under the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), corporate events, playing in New York, Wickie Wackie Music Fest and most recently the GWM showroom launch, Alpha has no shortage of opportunities. We adapted. We grew stronger.”

Director of Music, Gay Magnus, said the Class of 2026 is ready to make its mark.

“It has been an absolute privilege to watch Joel, Neon, Josh-Lemar, Jesse, Leon and Royan complete the Associate Degree in music and grow into the exceptional musicians and creative leaders they are today,” she said. “And I have to applaud Jonathan White for being the best first Professional Pathway student Alpha could hope for. Their success reflects their dedication to their craft, their perseverance and belief in their potential.  I look forward to the impact they will make in the musical community.”

Alpha Administrator, Margaret Little Wilson, said the Class of 2026 will be a valuable contributor to the Alpha community.

“Our new graduates bring a profound sense of pride to my heart,” said Mrs Little. “To Joel, Jonathan, Neon, Leon, Josh-Lemar, Jesse and Royan: graduation is not just the end of your studies, but your official entry into a sacred tradition. You now carry the torch of Alpha. Guard it well, represent us with dignity and remember that you are forever a part of this special family.”

For most Alpha graduates, the day meant the culmination of years of training which could not have been possible without the support of the Sisters of Mercy in Jamaica who have been managing the school since 1880.

Alpha also wishes to thank Digicel Foundation and Alane Cameron and friends who made a special effort to support the Class of 2026. We salute you!
