The Supernova International Ska Festival has been an annual event for ska fans worldwide since 2013. As the temporary capital of the ska music community every September, Supernova is part festival, part reunion, part vinyl showcase, part charitable event and, of course, an all around great time for all ages. The Alpha School of Music was honoured to have the support of the legendary record label Studio One as well as clothing brand Jamaica Nice., the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport as well as the innovative S Hotel properties in Kingston and Montego Bay.

Attending Supernova Ska Festival gave Alpha School of Music Associate Degree students Josh-Lemar Palmer and Zuri Gordon the opportunity to learn about festival production in a real world environment. They also had the unique experience of hearing the evolution of ska music around the world without leaving the venue. And they even got to attend band practice for the 200+-member Marching Force Band at nearby Hampton University.

After the festival , Josh-Lemar said it was a wonderful experience he will carry with him on his music journey. “Even though Jamaica is a small country,” he said, “we have impacted the world in major way and that was evident at the festival. I will use what I learned to improve as a musician and producer. A big thank you to Supernova, Studio One and Jamaica Nice for giving me the experience of a lifetime.”

Past student Johnny Osbourne, centre, performed at the festival and spent time with Alpha School of Music (R-L) Josh-Lemar Palmer, Gay Magnus, Zuri Gordon, Johnny Osbourne, Sparrow Martin and friend.

Sparrow Martin, Alpha’s Bandmaster Emeritus, said the opportunity for students and music staff to participate in the Supernova International Ska Festival was invaluable.

“Alpha played an important role in the development of ska,” said Sparrow. “Ska music is still meaningful to Alpha, and, although not in its original form, to the rest of the world. Supernova is a magnificent way for Alpha to connect with the people share a love for the music that is so near and dear to us all.”

As you can see below, Sparrow enjoyed no shortage of participation!

It was wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. Thanks to all who supported Alpha and spent time with us. See you again next year!
