Supernova International Ska Festival in the USA has been a generous supporter and partner to the Alpha School of Music since 2020. Virginia’s WHRO television station recently looked back at 10 years of Supernova Ska Festival and Gay Magnus, Alpha’s Music Director, made the cut!
Attending Supernova Ska Festival offers Alpha School of Music Associate Degree students the opportunity to learn about festival production in a real world environment and network with ska musicians from around the world. Supernova organizers, bands and fans have sponsored students, created work experiences and connected the school with sustaining gifts. In 2024, Alpha students and staff attended with support from Studio One, Jamaica NIce., Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture and the S Hotel Group. Click here for the photos and video recaps.
Tim and April Receveur fell in love with ska music in the 90s while living in Japan. In 2014, they started The Supernova Ska Festival in Northern VA. After moving to Hampton, VA, they brought the festival with them. Ten years later, it has grown into a three-day event at Fort Monroe hosting 15,000 patrons while showcasing many of the best ska and reggae musicians worldwide.
